SoHo Broadway Community: Meet Detective William Campaign, Neighborhood Coordination Officer at the NYPD 5th Precinct

Detective William Campaign was among this year’s six Cast Iron Partner Award recipients for distinguished service to the community announced at SoHo Broadway Initiative’s 8th Annual Meeting and presented at the SoHo Broadway Holiday Social. We caught up with William to learn about what brought him to SoHo and his involvement in the community.

Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: 2016

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

Before I got transferred to 5th Precinct, I was part of Operation Impact in Midtown South and Times Square. At the time, upon completion of service in that program, officers had to transfer to a different area after 2 years. The Sergeant at the 5th Precinct learned I spoke Chinese and had me placed there; I have had great career here since.

In 2018, was placed in Neighborhood Coordination unit. Neighborhood Coordination Officers act as a liaison between the community and units in in the NYPD. We assist detective squads investigating major criminal complaints and try to address conditions the community brought brings forward to us. I work with the SoHo Broadway Initiative and many other organizations and community members.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

I love the fact that it is active, busy and has a diverse community.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

Believe it or not, it is being promoted to Detective because it was a big deal. My work in SoHo got me promoted in October 2021.

If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?

My partner would say the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, but for me it was always the Amazon store, a fun place to play with gadgets. I also love McNally Jackson, one of last bookstores in the area.

What should we know about you outside of working here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

My wife and I enjoy active stuff like hiking. I enjoy the gym, movies and books. I’m currently reading Mike Matthews’ Beyond Bigger Leaner Stronger, which is based on research into science behind training.

Interested in learning more about the NYPD 5th Precinct? Find information on their website about monthly Community Council meetings and contact information for Neighborhood Coordination Officers.

Jean-Andre Antoine Receives Cast Iron Partner Award from Mark Dicus

Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: 2010

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

As a native of NYC, I went to high school in Chelsea which isn’t too far from SoHo and some days I would hang out down in SoHo. Since I was young, I’ve always felt a different energy in this part of the city, the epitome of the melting pot of cultures and creativity. For the last 10 years I’ve been taking and selling Polaroid portraits to passersby.

Jean-Andre Antoine Taking Photo of Passersby

Tell us more about your work.

I’m in the art and photography industry and specialize in portraiture. A major part of being a portrait photographer has to do with having someone reveal themselves to the photographer, which most of the time allows for a moment of intimacy revealed on the surface of a Polaroid photograph.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

I’ve always appreciated SoHo for being a creative clash of culture, style, fashion, creativity and art and a home of the creatives.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

One of the more memorable moments was when one of the ideas I had been thinking about for some years finally came to life with the help of the SoHo Broadway Initiative, where I was able to project some of my Polaroid images on the building where I’ve been working from on Prince street.

If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?

If I had 20 minutes, I would go to Prince and Broadway and just soak up as much of this creative energy as possible.

SoHo Broadway Community: Konstance Patton is co-founder of artist collective SoHo Renaissance Factory

Konstance Patton was among this year’s six Cast Iron Partner Award recipients for distinguished service to the community announced at SoHo Broadway Initiative’s 8th Annual Meeting and presented at the SoHo Broadway Holiday Social. We caught up with Konstance to learn about what brought her to SoHo and her involvement in the community.

Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: 2005

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

I came to New York City in 2005, and I made SoHo one of my home bases immediately. It’s so inspiring, and so many of the most important artists of our time roamed the SoHo streets. I came to SoHo to be one of the greats, to inspire and create beautiful and dynamic artworks. I’m a painter, sculptor, and storyteller, and I love to bring people together with art.

What does your organization do?

My organization, SoHo Renaissance Factory (SRF), is an artist collective who came together to build street museums on the plywood covering SoHo. SRF was founded by myself and 4 of my friends in June 2020 during the shutdowns, with the aim to bring beauty to the people during such a scary time in history.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

I just love the energy of SoHo Broadway so much, it is like electricity. So many personalities and of course the art, from the galleries to the street art, always stays fresh. So many walks of life visit the community. It’s just a great place for a creative.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

My favorite memory was seeing my artwork hung as a banner in the SoHo Broadway corridor. It was everything! There were 5 in total, but my favorite moment was seeing the banner that was on Broadway just south of Houston. From Houston and Broadway it looked like my Goddezz Painting was welcoming us all to the neighborhood, and she was.

If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?

If I had 20 minutes I would walk from Houston down Broadway, then cut over to Crosby and enjoy all the beautiful street art. I’d spend at least a few minutes on a stoop with a coffee, chilling and people watching.

What should we know about you outside of working here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

People should look out for my projects including Be A Lover Fest, a street art festival based in SoHo (the 2023 edition will be absolutely lovely). I host pop ups with CocoRedoux, where artists customize vintage pieces, and a part of the proceeds goes to charity. I am always looking to collaborate with like minded people who want to make our world better. Find me on Instagram at @KonArtStudio

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

We moved our US office to NYC from Portland in 2020. When looking at neighborhoods for our new office, SoHo really seemed to fit our brand. We wanted something central, lively and quintessential New York!

We are a chocolate company with mission to eliminate modern slavery in the cocoa industry. Not just our chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide!

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

We love being close to other business and cool pop-ups! It inspires us and helps us to spread the word about our mission at Tony’s

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

Definitely seeing our first NYC billboard on the corner of Broadway and Canal! We also had an MTA bus with our branding running along Broadway this summer. Super cool to see it from our office window.

If you had 20 minutes free, where would you go?

Our team is a big fan of bubble tea, so we often walk to Boba Guys on Houston for a mid-day treat!

What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

Our team recently went to the Global Citizen Festival together in Central Park, which was really fun! We are partners with Global Citizen so Tony’s had a presence there as well.

Title: Business Operations Manager

Organization: pulsd, inc.

Month/Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: June 2019

Address: 568 Broadway

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

Our office used to be just up the street at 594 Broadway but in 2019 we moved to a bigger office at 568 Broadway. A large part of our business is building relationships with our partners, and being located centrally in such a vibrant neighborhood helps facilitate those face-to-face interactions that are so valuable to us. I manage Business Operations here, so I assist our customers and partners with anything they may need, evaluate our current product offerings, and manage the day-to-day.

What does your organization do, what industry are you in?

pulsd was started by New Yorkers, for New Yorkers. We are a media company that partners with hundreds of local restaurants, fitness studios, spas, salons, event venues, etc. to market special offers on their behalf and get the word out about their business! Our mission is to democratize New York City and make the city’s experiences accessible to everyone. We also have an editorial side of the business where we post free events going on in the city. Follow us on Instagram @pulsd to be in the know!

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

We love the vibrancy of the neighborhood and all the hustle and bustle. There’s always so much going on here! Great shopping, coffee shops, pop-ups, restaurants, and bars. Also love how centrally located it is!

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

I simply love getting to be immersed in this neighborhood every day. Whether it be on my walk into the office or running errands at lunch, I’m grateful I’m able to spend so much of my time here! I have also seen quite a few famous people. Cody Rigsby from Peloton and more recently Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead.

If you had 20 minutes free, where would you go?

I’d walk to the Mulberry Street Library and check out a book, stop by one of the many pop-ups, or by Matchaful for a matcha latte!

What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

When not at work I’m usually reading or exploring Manhattan by foot! I think walking around the city is a great way to get to know your neighborhood and I’ve also enjoyed exploring the SoHo Broadway area during my lunch break! When traveling by foot, you stumble upon little gems that you may not have noticed by car. I’m looking forward to continuing to help build pulsd and creating valuable experiences for New Yorkers!

SoHo Broadway Community: We caught up with small business owner Jenny Son, who has run eyeLure Boutique in the SoHo Broadway corridor for the last 10 years.

Name: Jenny Son

Title: Manager & Founder

Organization: eyeLure Boutique

Month/Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: April 2012

Address: 580 Broadway, Suite 903

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

I have been a small business owner for 10 years in SoHo, and I run a total beauty salon called eyeLure Boutique. Beauty and SoHo are ideas that are complementary, and that is why I came to SoHo to open up eyeLure Boutique. I strive to continue to research and explore the most current beauty trends and bring the services that reflect these trends to SoHo through eyeLure Boutique’s services.

What does your organization do, what industry are you in?

I started my career in the beauty industry in 1999, and worked as a beauty specialist at various places including Bergdorf Goodman and the back stages of the New York Fashion Week. With many years of experience in the industry, I had an idea to open up a place that offers the solution to all the trending beauty needs, and to cater it to the busy New Yorkers who often have too little time to get all the pampering that they deserve. Over the years, eyeLure has expanded and grown to become a one stop shop for complete beauty services, including lash extensions, facials, make up and semi-permanent make up, nails, waxing, and aroma massage. Some of these services are offered simultaneously, which is perfect for people who have limited time.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

SoHo is a neighborhood of such diverse personalities, styles and identities that offers opportunities for all kinds of friendships and experiences. Streets are colorful with a diversity of fashion statements, and so energetic with people of all ages, from old to young. You make friendships with the locals who are regulars at the places that you’re also regulars at, you run into tourists and end up helping with directions or even taking a picture for them, you have these celebrity sightings and it’s almost like you’re a tourist within your own neighborhood. We actually have a few celebrity regulars at eyeLure including Brooke Shields, Jessica Chastain and Julia Fox, and it’s still an adjustment for myself and other customers to be sharing the same space as world-famous icons.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

Lunch time is sacred at eyeLure. Each of us in the eyeLure team would bring food from home, and we would get to know each other more by sharing our food in the small lounge space behind the curtains. While the pot-luck-style lunch times are fun and makes room for bonding, we also take full advantage of the restaurants here in SoHo. We’d pick dates where we decide to order from Lombardi’s, Il Corallo Trattoria, and many more iconic NYC restaurants and have NYC’s signature foods behind our lounge curtains. During restaurant weeks, we’d even close up the shop for a whole hour and take an excursion to Lure Fishbar and other more upscale restaurants offering the prix fixe Restaurant week deals. The memories of building meaningful relationships amongst eyeLure staff over the wide array of food offered by SoHo restaurants are of my most cherished memories in SoHo Broadway.

If you had 20 minutes free, where would you go?

I used to enjoy having a 20 minute tea break down at the Harney & Sons tea store before the pandemic. It was like my sanctuary in the middle of a busy day. I’m not sure if they’re open and allowing in-store tea time again, but I’d love to go and reclaim my tea sanctuary.

What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

I was born a Seoulite—born and raised in Seoul, Korea—then became a New Yorker at heart when New York became my home for over 2 decades. With two major cities as my homes, I’m a busy bee by nature and love the hustle and the fast-paced movement of cities. Recently, I’ve been learning to enjoy having a break, disconnecting from everything that keeps our minds busy, and taking refuge in nature. It’s become my new ritual to drive up to the Catskills when I need a good break, and enjoy a more simple life while staying a weekend in the Getaway Tiny Cabins with no internet, no stress, and only nature and good company.

SoHo Broadway People: Entrepreneur shares her experiences of discovering and creating community

Vivienne Yang recently sat down with SoHo Broadway Initiative to tell us about VillageOne, what attracted her to SoHo, and her favorite parts of being in the neighborhood.

Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway:  2018

Address: 594 Broadway, Suite 701

What brought you to SoHo Broadway?  What do you do here?

Before making the move to NYC, I found myself drawn to the SoHo community. SoHo Broadway is one of the most quintessential and dynamic neighborhoods in New York City, and I often noticed that cutting-edge ideas, albeit strange at times, had a chance of becoming a reality here.

I met many people who helped shape my vision and motivated me to become a dreamer. Two years ago, I decided to start VillageOne and SoHo was exactly where I wanted to be. When my broker took me here to see the 594 Broadway building, I knew. “This is it!”

What does your organization do, and what industry are you in?

VillageOne is a workspace designed for connecting creative and entrepreneurial minds. We provide a coworking space, meeting room, event venue and professional photo studio for varied needs. Our goal is to break down the walls between industries and create a community where people can exchange ideas and create a unique synergy.

We curate new artwork at our space to help established and emerging artists gain exposure to the public. At the same time, this provides a refreshing and motivating environment for our members.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

The craziness and the calm, the chaos and the order, the solitude and friendships that all coexist here in a perfectly harmonious way. People say it’s difficult to make friends in NYC, but I don’t think that is true. People around me are very supportive and always willing to help.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

My favorite experience is that I realized my dream of becoming an entrepreneur and started my own business here. Before launching VillageOne, I worked as an anchor for one of China’s biggest TV stations, Phoenix TV. I had the opportunity to live in Beijing, Hong Kong and traveled to many countries. It inspired me to bridge the eastern and western hemispheres.

In the future, I want to expand VillageOne in many major creative cities around the world and encourage growth among our members. I hope VillageOne can serve as a sharing platform from city to city, where people can introduce their products and work. And SoHo Broadway is the starting point of my dream.

If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?

I would check out the sample sales downstairs, the Artist & Fleas market, and have a cup of matcha latte at the corner of Prince Street.

What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

I love to watch different shows in the city. The stand-up comedy shows are hilarious around Washington Square Park. I also like to discover hidden bars and shops around SoHo and the Villages. During long weekends, I enjoy taking a trip to the suburbs outside of the city for a break.

Architect David Briggs shares the story of his decades in SoHo

David Briggs, AIA, LEED AP, Principal and Founding Partner of Loci Architecture shared his journey through four decades SoHo at the Initiative’s Fifth Annual Meeting. We caught up with David again to introduce him to our SoHo Broadway community readership.

Year of arrival on SoHo Broadway: 2004

Address: 594 Broadway, Suite 506

What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?

In 2004, I was looking for new office space and a broker brought me to 594 Broadway; I clicked with the building (and Donna Vogel!). This was the first time that I would not be subletting office space, so taking space solely for Loci Architecture was a big deal. I signed a lease and have been here ever since, expanding into the adjacent suite in 2010. I had been in SoHo many times before, including working for a firm in the Singer Building—one of my favorite buildings in New York City—in the late 1980s. I’m an architect and enjoy working as one in SoHo. I started my practice in a one-bedroom apartment that I shared with my future wife and am proud of being able to grow a firm in one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the world.

What does your organization do and what industry are you in?

We’re an architecture and planning firm. Most of our work is for charter and private schools, residential and commercial development, work spaces, private residences, and community spaces. We were recently commissioned for a 4,000-square-foot gallery project in Chelsea. We’re a general practice firm—I like the diversity of our projects and clientele and it really helps us navigate the economy’s cyclical nature.

What do you like about SoHo Broadway?

I love the area’s buildings, character, and manufacturing history. A lot of the unique texture that drew me here has either disappeared or been burnished with new types of industry—flagship retail, high-end living spaces, and increased tourism.

It is easy for me to get to the surrounding neighborhoods which still have a rich and diverse character. It will always be important for SoHo to strike a balance between serving visitors and those who put roots down living and working in the neighborhood. I am curious to see how the 21st century economy will impact our historic community. I also see it as a fascinating opportunity to reimagine how the street life and public realm will adapt to new conditions.

What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?

I worked in New York City during the summers while I studied architecture upstate, living up in Morningside Heights near Columbia University. One summer I paid $133 per month in rent, the next summer I paid $250. I would come downtown every weekend to see the performances in Washington Square and visit the galleries in SoHo. I grew up in the suburbs so it was a real supernova for me— everything was new and exciting, and even a little unsettling. All I could do was watch people and try to square it with my upbringing. It took a long time, but I eventually realized that the suburbs were the strange place and the city was my home. I remember going to stores like Canal Jean Co. to buy cool and very inexpensive clothes. I bought my first boxers in SoHo at Ad Hoc for $18. I even did the touristy thing and purchased a sweatshirt on West Broadway with SoHo’s “10012” ZIP Code printed on it in big block numbers and wore it back at college. My friends laughed, but I felt like it gave me some sort of SoHo citizenship and a much coveted imprimatur of coolness.

If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?

I’d walk west or east of Broadway, and then south. As one gets closer to Canal and away from the main corridor, there are still pockets of SoHo’s colorful past (and fewer tourists). It is a night-and-day contrast with Broadway. I like eating lunch on the cast iron steps in front of many of the old buildings. I also love going to the Mulberry Street Library on Jersey Street; it’s great to have one so close. Housing Works Bookstore Café is a marvelous space and a true SoHo institution. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve had impromptu meetings/interviews there.

What should we know about you outside of working here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?

I’m a community activist in Brooklyn and run a nonprofit called Gowanus by Design, focusing on urban design issues related to the Gowanus Canal Superfund site. I’m on Community Board 6 in Brooklyn and chair the Landmarks Committee. I am also a painter—I have a studio near where I live and participate in the annual Gowanus Open Studios.

SoHo is a gift to our city and I’m humbled to be part of its incredibly talented community. I look forward to creating and advocating on its behalf for many years.
