What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?
I have been a small business owner for 10 years in SoHo, and I run a total beauty salon called eyeLure Boutique. Beauty and SoHo are ideas that are complementary, and that is why I came to SoHo to open up eyeLure Boutique. I strive to continue to research and explore the most current beauty trends and bring the services that reflect these trends to SoHo through eyeLure Boutique’s services.
What does your organization do, what industry are you in?
I started my career in the beauty industry in 1999, and worked as a beauty specialist at various places including Bergdorf Goodman and the back stages of the New York Fashion Week. With many years of experience in the industry, I had an idea to open up a place that offers the solution to all the trending beauty needs, and to cater it to the busy New Yorkers who often have too little time to get all the pampering that they deserve. Over the years, eyeLure has expanded and grown to become a one stop shop for complete beauty services, including lash extensions, facials, make up and semi-permanent make up, nails, waxing, and aroma massage. Some of these services are offered simultaneously, which is perfect for people who have limited time.
What do you like about SoHo Broadway?
SoHo is a neighborhood of such diverse personalities, styles and identities that offers opportunities for all kinds of friendships and experiences. Streets are colorful with a diversity of fashion statements, and so energetic with people of all ages, from old to young. You make friendships with the locals who are regulars at the places that you’re also regulars at, you run into tourists and end up helping with directions or even taking a picture for them, you have these celebrity sightings and it’s almost like you’re a tourist within your own neighborhood. We actually have a few celebrity regulars at eyeLure including Brooke Shields, Jessica Chastain and Julia Fox, and it’s still an adjustment for myself and other customers to be sharing the same space as world-famous icons.
What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?
Lunch time is sacred at eyeLure. Each of us in the eyeLure team would bring food from home, and we would get to know each other more by sharing our food in the small lounge space behind the curtains. While the pot-luck-style lunch times are fun and makes room for bonding, we also take full advantage of the restaurants here in SoHo. We’d pick dates where we decide to order from Lombardi’s, Il Corallo Trattoria, and many more iconic NYC restaurants and have NYC’s signature foods behind our lounge curtains. During restaurant weeks, we’d even close up the shop for a whole hour and take an excursion to Lure Fishbar and other more upscale restaurants offering the prix fixe Restaurant week deals. The memories of building meaningful relationships amongst eyeLure staff over the wide array of food offered by SoHo restaurants are of my most cherished memories in SoHo Broadway.
If you had 20 minutes free, where would you go?
I used to enjoy having a 20 minute tea break down at the Harney & Sons tea store before the pandemic. It was like my sanctuary in the middle of a busy day. I’m not sure if they’re open and allowing in-store tea time again, but I’d love to go and reclaim my tea sanctuary.
What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?
I was born a Seoulite—born and raised in Seoul, Korea—then became a New Yorker at heart when New York became my home for over 2 decades. With two major cities as my homes, I’m a busy bee by nature and love the hustle and the fast-paced movement of cities. Recently, I’ve been learning to enjoy having a break, disconnecting from everything that keeps our minds busy, and taking refuge in nature. It’s become my new ritual to drive up to the Catskills when I need a good break, and enjoy a more simple life while staying a weekend in the Getaway Tiny Cabins with no internet, no stress, and only nature and good company.
