What brought you to SoHo Broadway? What do you do here?
I came here to work at the Architectural League as Editor in Chief of Urban Omnibus, an online publication dedicated to citymaking. Urban Omnibus explores the many ways in which we observe, understand and transform the city through articles, interviews, photography, and design projects. It takes a look at different aspects of New York’s urban environments and how they are made and experienced.
What do you like about SoHo Broadway?
I love how central it is. Especially at the corner of E. Houston and Broadway. It feels like the center of the universe. You can be in different neighborhoods within a few steps which adds to the excitement of working here. There are a number of places to be within a 2-minute walk.
What is your favorite SoHo Broadway memory or experience?
I think the first time that I left the subway and got onto Broadway at night, I looked south and saw the Woolworth Building and looked north to see the Chrysler Building. It was such a special feeling to have that view. Those buildings are so spectacular when they’re lit up against the dark sky that it’s just, Wow.
If you had 20 minutes, where would you go?
One of my favorite places is just outside of the confines of the district. I absolutely love the garden inside Washington Square Village. The plaza is tucked into 2 superblocks which are NYU faculty apartments, but it is totally accessible to the public and a very special oasis in lower Manhattan. Without traveling more than three blocks you have open space, you can hear birds singing. In spring, all the trees are in bloom.
What should we know about you outside of working/living here? What do you do for fun or are you looking forward to doing?
I was born in New York and have lived here almost all my life. Everywhere I go there are many temporal layers activated at once. I teach architectural and urban history and write about public space in the city. I’m really into the new ferries and am always looking forward to crossing the East River.
